What You'll Learn
This course prepares you for the Professional certification exam, covering all official exam domains and their approximate weightings:
Domain 1 Section 1: Bootstrapping and maintaining a Google Cloud organization (20%)
- Design the overall resource hierarchy (application-centric org/projects/folders, shared networking via Shared VPC/VPC Peering/Private Service Connect, multi-project monitoring/logging, IAM roles + org policies, service accounts, data residency)
- Manage infrastructure with IaC tooling (Infrastructure Manager, Cloud Foundation Toolkit, Config Connector, GitOps, Terraform, Helm) and scripting automation (Python, Go)
- Design CI/CD architecture stacks across Google Cloud, hybrid, and multi-cloud (Cloud Build, Cloud Deploy with Kustomize/Skaffold, Artifact Registry, Jenkins/Argo CD/Packer/kpt, CI/CD tooling security)
- Manage multiple environments (ephemeral environments, configuration/policy management, GKE fleets, safe patching and upgrading)
- Enable secure cloud development environments (Cloud Workstations, Cloud Shell, bootstrapping with custom images/IDE/Cloud SDK, AI-assisted dev/ops via Gemini Code Assist/Cloud Assist/CLI)
Domain 2 Section 2: Building and implementing CI/CD pipelines, including continuous testing, for application, infrastructure, and machine learning workloads (25%)
- Design pipelines (CI/CD of apps and infrastructure, artifact management, deployment to hybrid/multi-cloud/GKE, pipeline triggers, approval flows)
- Implement and manage pipelines (auditing/tracking deployments via Cloud Audit Logs, deployment strategies like canary/blue-green/rolling/traffic-splitting/feature flags, troubleshooting deployment issues)
- Manage pipeline configuration and secrets (Cloud KMS, Secret Manager, Certificate Manager, Parameter Manager, Workload Identity Federation, build vs runtime secret injection)
- Secure the deployment pipeline (Artifact Analysis/vulnerability scanning, Binary Authorization, SLSA framework, environment-based IAM policies)
Domain 3 Section 3: Applying site reliability engineering practices (18%)
- Balance change velocity and reliability (defining SLIs/SLOs/SLAs, error budgets, opportunity cost of risk vs number of nines)
- Manage service lifecycle (planning, deployment, maintenance, retirement)
- Capacity planning (quotas, limits, reservations, Dynamic Workload Scheduler) and autoscaling (managed instance groups, Cloud Run, GKE)
- Mitigate incident impact on users (draining/redirecting traffic, adding capacity, rollback strategies)
Domain 4 Section 4: Implementing observability practices and troubleshooting issues (25%)
- Instrument and collect telemetry (Ops Agent, OpenTelemetry, Cloud Audit/VPC Flow Logs, log optimization, metrics collection incl. Managed Service for Prometheus, synthetic monitors, custom/log-based metrics)
- Manage and analyze logs (Logs Explorer, Logging query language, exporting to BigQuery/Pub/Sub/Cloud Storage, PII/PHI redaction, Gemini Cloud Assist log analysis)
- Manage metrics, dashboards, and alerts (Metrics Explorer, dashboards/PromQL, alerting policies on SLIs/SLOs/cost, third-party integrations like PagerDuty, Gemini Cloud Assist for metrics)
- Capture and analyze distributed traces (OpenTelemetry, trace waterfalls/spans, correlating trace IDs with logs, Gemini Cloud Assist trace analysis)
- Troubleshoot infrastructure, CI/CD pipeline, application, observability, and performance/latency issues
Domain 5 Section 5: Optimizing performance and cost (12%)
- Collect performance information via application performance monitoring and Active Assist insights/recommendations
- Implement FinOps practices for observability costs and Spot VMs
- Optimize resource usage for cost/efficiency and plan infrastructure cost (committed-use/sustained-use discounts, network tiers)
- Leverage Google Cloud recommenders (cost, security, performance, manageability, reliability) and optimize individual workload costs (GKE, Cloud Run, Compute Engine)
