Why a CompTIA certification carries weight

There is no shortage of IT certificates. What separates CompTIA from a course-completion certificate is that the credential is independently accredited and independently proctored - and hiring managers know it.

• Vendor-neutral by design. CompTIA certifies the principle, not one manufacturer's console. A CompTIA A+ holder is expected to apply the concept in whatever stack the employer runs, which is why the credential survives a technology refresh.
• ISO 17024 accredited by ANAB. CompTIA's core certifications are accredited to the international standard for personnel certification bodies. The exam is built to a documented job-task analysis, not to a syllabus someone invented.
• Recognised in government frameworks. Several CompTIA certifications are approved under the US Department of Defense 8140/8570 directive, a baseline that multinationals and defence-adjacent employers in Singapore routinely mirror in their own hiring standards.
• Performance-based questions. CompTIA exams do not only ask you to recognise the right answer. Performance-based items drop you into a simulated environment and require you to complete the task, which is far harder to pass on memorisation alone.
• Portable across borders. The certification means the same thing in Singapore, Sydney or London - useful in a market where regional mobility is common.

A+ appears in more tech support job listings than any other IT credential and is the only entry-level certification with performance-based testing, so it proves you can actually perform the task rather than recognise the right answer. It is the standard first rung of an IT career.

The 220-1101 (Core 1) and 220-1102 (Core 2) exam at a glance

Recommended background. No formal prerequisites. CompTIA suggests around nine to twelve months of hands-on experience, but A+ is designed as the entry point.

The weightings tell you where to spend your study time. Read them as a revision budget: the heaviest domain deserves proportionally more of your practice.

Note that A+ requires you to pass both Core 1 (220-1101) and Core 2 (220-1102). They are sat as two separate exams and you are only certified once both are complete. There is no requirement to sit them on the same day.

Sit your exam at our centre — and practise free before you do

You do not need to go anywhere else to sit the exam. How much will you actually pay? Funding for CompTIA A+ training

This is a WSQ-approved course (course reference TGS-2024048317), so the published fee of S$2,000 is not what most learners pay. Several schemes stack, and they are applied in a specific order: baseline subsidy first, then credits and claims against whatever is left.

1. Baseline WSQ course fee funding

Eligible Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents receive up to 70% course fee funding. Singapore Citizens aged 40 and above qualify for up to 90% under the Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES). SME-sponsored employees may also qualify for the enhanced rate. Subsidy is subject to eligibility and to meeting the attendance and assessment requirements.

2. SkillsFuture Credit (SFC)

Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above can offset the remaining fee payable after funding with their SkillsFuture Credit. Note the one restriction: the $4,000 Additional SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career Support) cannot be used on this course. 3. SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit (SFEC)

Sponsoring employees? Eligible Singapore-registered companies can draw on up to $10,000 of SFEC to cover out-of-pocket costs. Look the course up on SkillsFuture for Business.

4. PSEA

Eligible Singapore Citizens can pay the remaining fee from their Post-Secondary Education Account. Check the course listing on MySkillsFuture and look under “Keyword Tags” for a PSEA tag to confirm eligibility, then submit a PSEA withdrawal form to us.

5. Absentee Payroll

Employers sponsoring staff for this course may claim Absentee Payroll to offset the salary cost of hours their employee spends in training, subject to the prevailing SSG rates and caps.

Your route to certification

1. Check your funding eligibility. Confirm your citizenship, age band and whether your employer is sponsoring you - this determines whether you pay 30%, 10% or less of the published fee.
2. Register for the course. Pick a class date on the course page and reserve your seat.
3. Attend the instructor-led training. Complete the hands-on labs and the WSQ assessment to earn your Statement of Attainment.
4. Buy your exam voucher. Purchase the 220-1101 (Core 1) and 220-1102 (Core 2) voucher through us.
5. Sit the exam at our Pearson VUE test centre. Book a proctored slot at our centre while the material is fresh.
6. Submit your claims. Offset with SkillsFuture Credit or PSEA.
