Short version: At Budget 2026, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that Singaporeans who enrol in selected SkillsFuture AI courses will receive six months of free access to premium AI tools, starting from the second half of 2026. The Government is in discussions with Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Manus, and the specific tool you receive is expected to depend on the course you take. SWDA (formerly SSG) has not yet published the list of eligible courses — but you can start building your AI skills now with WSQ AI courses that already carry up to 70% funding.
What exactly was announced?
Speaking during the Budget 2026 statement on 12 February 2026, PM Lawrence Wong (who is also Finance Minister) set out a plan to get Singaporeans actively using AI rather than merely reading about it. The centrepiece for individual learners is a subscription giveaway tied to training: sign up for a qualifying AI course on the MySkillsFuture portal, and you get the paid tier of a major AI tool free for six months.
Manpower Minister Dr Tan See Leng framed the reasoning plainly: "Like learning a language, developing true fluency in AI comes from consistent use and building confidence through experimentation." The subsidy is not really about the software licence — it is about removing the excuse not to practise. A learner who finishes a two-day course and then loses access to the tool tends to forget what they learned. Six months of daily use is what turns a course into a habit.

Why this is a bigger deal than it sounds
A premium AI subscription runs roughly S$28–S$40 a month, so six months is about S$170–S$240 of value per learner. That is real, but it is the smaller half of the story. The larger half is what happens when a working professional has an unrestricted, paid-tier model on their desk for half a year:
- You hit the good models. Free tiers throttle you onto smaller models and cap your usage right when a task gets interesting. Paid tiers unlock the frontier models, longer context, file uploads and the agentic features that actually change how you work.
- You get past the demo phase. Most people's AI experience stops at "write me an email". Six months is long enough to reach the second stage — automating a genuinely tedious part of your job.

How to get ready before H2 2026
- Check your SkillsFuture Credit balance. Log in to MySkillsFuture with Singpass. Every Singaporean aged 25 and above has an opening credit, and those aged 40 and above received a S$4,000 top-up under the SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme. Here is how to claim it.
- Decide literacy or fluency. If AI is still abstract to you, start foundational. If you already use ChatGPT weekly, skip ahead to an applied course in your function.
- Book a course now rather than in July. Demand for AI seats will spike when the subscription scheme goes live. Class sizes are capped.
- Keep your MySkillsFuture profile current. Whatever claim mechanism SWDA lands on, it will almost certainly run through your MySkillsFuture account and Singpass.
