Virtual Reality for Architecture Visualisations with Unreal Engine 

Virtual Reality is about to change architecture visualisation forever.  Don't miss the train and learn how you can use virtual reality to wow your customers and prospects when showing them your interior designs or architecture visuals.  This step by step introductory course will guide you through taking your models in 3ds max and transfer it into a 'realtime' archviz file that can be viewed using a vr headset.   

At the end of the course 

  • Students will have a practical experience and understand the workflow in creating a realtime Architecture Visualisation project ready for use with Virtual Reality.  
  • Students will be able to take their Archviz work in 3ds max and transfer them into Unreal Engine 4 to make it 'Playable' in Virtual Reality 
  • Understand how to use the unreal engine material editor 
  • Students will know the different lightings available in Unreal Engine 4

Day 1

Module 1: Setting up 3ds Max 

  • File/system unit scale 
  • Preparing your scripts 
  • Vray-standard Material converter 
  • Ts Tools 
  • Steamroller 
  • Editing TS_TOOLS 


Module 2: Getting 3ds max model ready for unreal engine 

  • Materials name 
  • Mesh name 
  • Ensure system unit scale is in cm 
  • Convert Vray Materials to standard* 
  • Ungrouping and removing lights/camera 
  • Removing backface cull 
  • Steamroller Script 
  • Ts tools export to FBX 
  • FBX Settings 
  • TS tools copy locations 


Module 3: Basic Navigating in unreal engine 

  • Creating a new Project 
  • Using a blank project type with no starter content 
  • Choosing the first person shooter project type 
  • Moving around in unreal engine 
  • Layouts 


Module 4: Exporting models and importing into unreal engine 

  • Import objects without ts tools 
  • Importing objects(no collision and no uv unwrap) 
  • Copy locations using ts_tools 

Day 2


Module  5: Lighting 

  • Adding a skybox 
  • Skylight and lightmass portal 
  • Directional light 
  • Spot lights and pointlights 
  • Lightmass Importance Volume 
  • First build to check for missing uv unwrap 


Module 6: Materials 

  • Diffuse map 
  • Metallic map 
  • Normal Map 
  • Roughness Map 
  • Specular Maps 
  • Emissive and multiplier 
  • Quick way to change UV 


Module 7: Setting up controllers and running our first VR project.  

  • Configuring controller 
  • First test on Oculus Rift

He currently runs a successful youtube channel to help architects and interior designers create architectural visualisations in Unreal Engine and has gained more than 6000 followers in 6 months.

VR Unreal Trainer Christopher Lee is an undergraduate at the School of Arts, Design & Media in Nanyang Technological University. He is an all rounded multimedia specialist who possesses skills ranging from graphic design, digital composition, visual effects, 3D modelling as well as game design. His passion for design is fuelled by making work stand out from one another.

VR Unreal trainerS.Gunasegaran , is a trainer with 30 years experience in New Innovative Interactive media. He is a DACE certified trainer and its Specialist Diploma in Computer gaming form Nanyang Polytechnic.

He achieved Specialist diploma in Interactive Media from Singapore media academy with iMDA support and Skillsfuture study award in 2017. Currently, he is selected by WDA inter Innovjam 2017 and Inovplus2017 challenge to produce Virtual Reality and Augmented Mixed Reality content for Life long Learning.He hold a certificate in Immersive Environment Development supported by iMDA in 2017.
