What's This Course About

Internet of Things (IoT) Fundamentals for Beginners gives you a solid, hands-on foundation in IoT, the technology that connects everyday devices and sensors to the internet so they can collect data and be controlled remotely. IoT is transforming smart homes, buildings, cities, healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing. This course is designed for beginners, students, educators, IT and engineering professionals, and anyone curious about how connected devices work, with no prior electronics experience required.

You will start with an overview of the Internet of Things, exploring IoT architecture, devices, sensors and actuators, connectivity options such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, protocols such as MQTT and HTTP, and real-world applications. Next you will collect and post data to the cloud, connecting sensors to a microcontroller or single-board computer, writing simple code to read measurements such as temperature and humidity, and sending them to a cloud IoT platform.

The course then covers reading data and remotely controlling devices from the cloud, so you can switch lights, motors and relays from a dashboard or phone, and IoT data analytics and visualisation, building dashboards and charts that turn sensor data into insights and alerts. You will also learn basic IoT security practices, such as protecting device credentials and keeping firmware up to date. Every topic is hands-on with real hardware. By the end, you will understand how IoT systems work and be able to build a simple end-to-end IoT project with confidence.

Trainers

Trainers

Mr Tan Woei Ming is an Instructor, Software Developer and Agentic Automation specialist at Tertiary Infotech, and the trainer for Tertiary Courses' Arduino and IoT courses. His engineering roots run deep: he graduated with First-Class Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from NTU, which underpins his practical knowledge of sensors and embedded hardware, and he holds a Master of Intelligent Systems from NUS. Before teaching, he was a Data Scientist and later Data Science Lead at Micron Technology, where he led AI initiatives in predictive analytics, automation and process optimisation in the semiconductor and manufacturing industries. He is an ACLP-certified trainer who teaches with newcomers firmly in mind, introducing each technical idea only once learners have the foundation to use it. For IoT learners, that means a trainer who understands every link in the chain, from the sensor on the bench to the dashboard on the screen.

This course gives beginners, students, educators and IT and engineering professionals a hands-on foundation in the technology that connects everyday devices to the internet. Mr Tan begins with an overview of IoT and its role in smart homes, buildings, cities, healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing. Learners then collect data from sensors and post it to the cloud, before reversing the flow to read data back and control devices remotely. The final topic covers IoT data analytics and visualisation, turning raw readings into charts and dashboards that support decisions. Here Mr Tan's experience leading predictive analytics work is particularly valuable, as he shows learners how the data they collect can feed later AI and automation. He keeps explanations clear and jargon-light, and pairs every concept with a hands-on exercise, so participants finish with both a working connected setup and a clear mental model of how IoT systems are built.

Ken Yuen is an ACTA-certified adult educator specialising in IoT systems, STEM education and programming. As a Technical Consultant at Anson Engineering he developed IoT-based SCADA and temperature monitoring systems for industrial applications, and he has conducted WSQ and SkillsFuture courses in Arduino, Raspberry Pi, micro:bit, Jetson Nano and Python. He holds a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Nanyang Technological University and a Diploma in Electronic Engineering from Singapore Polytechnic. An MOE-registered instructor, he has taught coding and robotics programmes in over 50 schools and is also a certified PMP.

In Internet of Things (IoT) Fundamentals for Beginners, Ken focuses on hands-on experimentation with microcontrollers, sensors and automation systems. Learners begin with an overview of IoT, then collect data with sensors and post it to the cloud, read data back and control devices remotely, and finish with IoT data analytics and visualisation. His industry experience with monitoring systems helps beginners connect each exercise to real applications in buildings, manufacturing and smart homes. By blending educational expertise with technical project experience, Ken ensures participants leave able to build, test and apply simple IoT solutions in real-world contexts.

Shawn Koh Boon Hiap is an ACTA-certified trainer, IoT specialist and entrepreneur, and the founder of I.O.T. Workz, which offers integrated IoT solutions for residential, commercial and industrial use. A Smart Nation ambassador, he was invited by the Prime Minister's Office in December 2019 as a guest speaker at a Smart Nation event. His skills span IoT integration and development, software development, network and system administration, information security and project management, and he holds certifications including PMP, Information Security and Linux Administration. He developed a predictive online data-reduction system in 1996 for the RSAF Command and Control Centre and later formed the Ground-Based Radar System team at ST Electronics (InfoSoft).

Internet of Things (IoT) Fundamentals for Beginners draws directly on his work building IoT solutions through I.O.T. Workz. Shawn guides learners through an overview of IoT, covering architecture, devices, sensors and actuators, and connectivity options such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Participants then collect data and post it to the cloud, read data and remotely control devices from the cloud, and finish with IoT data analytics and visualisation. No prior electronics experience is needed, and his background as a trainer and mentor helps beginners build confidence step by step, leaving with a solid, hands-on foundation in how connected devices work.

Fritz Lim is an ACTA-certified trainer and experienced educator whose portfolio includes IoT prototypes on Arduino, micro:bit and Makeblock, robotics education, and web and mobile app development. He holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from NTU and has more than 15 years of teaching experience in IT, software development and electronics. He has developed and delivered training in Python, Arduino, Raspberry Pi and microcontroller-based systems for both youths and adults.

In Internet of Things (IoT) Fundamentals for Beginners, Fritz emphasises hands-on, project-based learning that builds confidence quickly. He guides learners through microcontroller programming, sensor integration and device connectivity as they progress from an overview of IoT to collecting data and posting it to the cloud, reading data back and controlling devices remotely, and finally analysing and visualising their IoT data. His experience teaching youths and adults alike means concepts are introduced step by step, with plenty of time to test and debug. Combining technical rigour with accessible teaching, Fritz helps learners design and test working IoT prototypes and understand how connected devices are used in real applications.

Richard Wan is a software and hardware developer and trainer with expertise in embedded system programming on microcontrollers, Arduino, Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone, together with AI, machine learning and computer vision. An ACLP-certified lecturer and ACTA certified trainer, he has decades of development experience across computer vision, communication and digital publishing. He holds an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering (Computer Vision) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has co-founded multiple high-tech companies, and has led AI-driven software development in healthcare, defence and manufacturing.

In Internet of Things (IoT) Fundamentals for Beginners, Richard uses his embedded systems experience to give learners a solid, hands-on foundation in IoT. Participants get an overview of IoT and its components, collect sensor data and post it to the cloud, read data and remotely control devices from the cloud, and finish with IoT data analytics and visualisation. His structured, beginner-friendly approach helps newcomers understand how smart devices communicate and interact with their environment, and why this matters for smart homes, buildings, healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing. Learners leave able to build simple connected projects and to evaluate where IoT could add value in their own work.
