WSQ AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate Training Singapore: DEA-C01 Exam Domains and Funding

Share
Summary

AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate is an associate-level AWS credential and one of the most recognised certifications in cloud computing. This guide makes the case for actually sitting DEA-C01, breaks down every exam domain and its weighting, and sets out the funding that brings the S$1,500 course fee down sharply for eligible learners. AWS exams are delivered through Pearson VUE, and Tertiary Infotech Academy is a Pearson VUE Authorized Test Center - so you can train and sit the exam at the same address.

Why you should actually sit the exam

Plenty of people attend cloud training and never book the exam. That is the single biggest waste in professional development, because the training teaches you the skill, but only the certification is visible to anyone else. Here is the honest case for booking DEA-C01.

  • Recruiters filter on it before a human reads your CV. Search any Singapore job board for cloud roles and the certification is named in the requirements. Applicant tracking systems match on that string. Without the credential you are often filtered out before your experience is ever assessed.
  • It is externally verifiable. Anyone can claim AWS experience. An AWS certification is issued by Amazon, carries a verification number, and can be checked by an employer in seconds. That asymmetry is precisely why it carries weight.
  • It pays. AWS certifications appear year after year at the top of global IT salary surveys, with the professional-level credentials among the highest paying of any certification in technology. The exam fee is a rounding error against a single salary revision.
  • The deadline is what makes you learn. A booked exam date converts good intentions into study. Learners who book the exam before the course ends pass at far higher rates than those who leave it open-ended, because the material is still fresh and there is a date to work towards.
  • It benefits your employer directly. AWS Partner Network membership tiers are calculated from the number of certified staff an organisation holds. Your certification is a business asset, which is a persuasive argument when asking your company to sponsor the exam fee.
  • It compounds. AWS certifications ladder deliberately - foundational to associate to professional and specialty. Each one you hold makes the next materially easier, and the ladder is the clearest structured path in cloud.

The exam costs USD 150 and takes 130 minutes. Set against the salary and mobility it unlocks - and against a course fee that funding already reduces sharply - it is one of the highest-return decisions available to a technology professional in Singapore. Book it before you finish the course.

One practical note: AWS gives every certification holder a 50% discount voucher towards their next exam, plus access to official practice material. Passing one exam makes the next one cheaper, so the ladder gets less expensive as you climb it.

Why AWS certifications carry weight

AWS has held the largest share of the global cloud infrastructure market for over a decade, and Singapore is one of its most established regions - AWS has operated an Asia Pacific (Singapore) Region since 2010 and has committed billions to local infrastructure. The practical consequence for your career is simple: more Singapore employers run workloads on AWS than on any other cloud, so an AWS credential is the one most likely to match the stack you will actually be hired to work on.

  • Role-based, not product-trivia. AWS certifications are built from job-task analysis of real roles, so the exam tests the decisions the role requires rather than memorised service limits.
  • Scenario-based questions. Associate and professional exams present multi-sentence scenarios with several technically valid answers, and ask for the best one given cost, resilience or security constraints. That is hard to pass without real understanding.
  • A deliberate ladder. Foundational, associate, professional and specialty tiers give a structured progression, each level building on the last.
  • Recertification keeps it current. Credentials are valid for three years, so a current certification means current knowledge - which is exactly why employers trust it in a field that changes this quickly.

Data Engineer Associate replaced the retired Data Analytics Specialty and is now AWS's dedicated data credential. Data engineering is one of the hardest roles in Singapore to hire for, and this certification validates the pipeline, storage and governance skills that employers cannot easily assess in an interview.

DEA-C01 exam domains and weightings

Read the weightings as a study budget. The heaviest domain deserves proportionally more of your practice time, and on a scored exam it is where marks are won or lost.

Exam domainWeightingWhat it covers
Data Ingestion and Transformation34%The largest domain: ingesting streaming and batch data, transforming and processing it with Glue, EMR and Lambda, orchestrating pipelines, and programming concepts including SQL and infrastructure as code.
Data Store Management26%Choosing the right data store, understanding data cataloguing systems, managing the data lifecycle, and designing schemas and schema evolution.
Data Operations and Support22%Automating data processing with AWS services, analysing data with Athena and Redshift, maintaining and monitoring pipelines, and ensuring data quality.
Data Security and Governance18%Authentication and authorisation, data encryption and masking, audit logging, and meeting privacy and governance requirements.

What the WSQ course covers

Our WSQ - AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate Training is instructor-led and hands-on, mapped to the DEA-C01 objectives above and delivered in our Woodlands Square training centre, with live online and hybrid options available. Because it is a WSQ-approved programme it carries the funding below and is assessed, so you leave with a Statement of Attainment as well as exam readiness.

Typical roles this leads to: Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, ETL Developer, Data Platform Engineer, Database Administrator.

Sit your exam at our centre — and practise free before you do

You do not need to go anywhere else to sit the exam. Tertiary Infotech Academy is a Pearson VUE Authorized Test Center, and AWS certification exams are delivered through the Pearson VUE network — so you can book and sit your proctored DEA-C01 exam at our training centre at 12 Woodlands Square, in the same room you studied in.

Bonus: register for this course and you get free practice exams. Course participants get access to our Practice Exam Portal, where you can rehearse DEA-C01 questions in realistic Practice Mode and under timed Exam Mode conditions, then retake them as many times as you like before the real thing.

This matters more than it sounds. The single best predictor of passing a certification exam first time is how many realistic practice questions you sat beforehand — not how many hours of content you watched. Practising under timed conditions is also what stops the clock from being the thing that beats you on exam day.

What you will actually pay: funding for AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate training

This is a WSQ-approved course (course reference TGS-2025053209), so the published fee of S$1,500 is not what most learners pay. The schemes stack, applied in order: baseline subsidy first, then credits and claims against the balance.

1. Baseline WSQ course fee funding

Eligible Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents receive up to 70% course fee funding. Singapore Citizens aged 40 and above qualify for up to 90% under the Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES). SME-sponsored employees may also qualify for the enhanced rate. Funding is subject to eligibility and to meeting the attendance and assessment requirements.

2. SkillsFuture Credit (SFC)

Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above can offset the remaining fee payable after funding with their SkillsFuture Credit. Note the restriction: the $4,000 Additional SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career Support) cannot be used on this course. You can apply directly on the MySkillsFuture portal using course code TGS-2025053209.

3. SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit (SFEC)

Sponsoring employees? Eligible Singapore-registered companies can draw on up to $10,000 of SFEC to cover out-of-pocket costs. Look the course up on SkillsFuture for Business.

4. PSEA

Eligible Singapore Citizens can pay the remaining fee from their Post-Secondary Education Account. Check the course listing on MySkillsFuture and look under “Keyword Tags” for a PSEA tag to confirm eligibility, then submit a PSEA withdrawal form to us.

5. UTAP

NTUC members can claim 50% of the unfunded course fee through the Union Training Assistance Programme, capped at $250 per year, or $500 per year for members aged 40 and above. Claims are submitted after course completion via the NTUC UTAP portal. UTAP support is subject to the course remaining UTAP-eligible at the time of your claim.

6. Absentee Payroll

Employers sponsoring staff may claim Absentee Payroll to offset the salary cost of the hours their employee spends in training, subject to the prevailing SSG rates and caps.

The AWS exam fee of USD 150 is paid separately to AWS and is not covered by course fee funding. All funding is subject to eligibility and to prevailing SSG policies at the time of course commencement - talk to us and we will work out your exact nett fee.

Your route to certification

  1. Check your funding eligibility. Citizenship, age band and employer sponsorship determine whether you pay 30%, 10% or less of the published fee.
  2. Register for the course. Pick a class date on the course page and reserve your seat.
  3. Book the exam before the course ends. Create an AWS Certification account, schedule DEA-C01 through Pearson VUE, and pick our test centre. A booked date is what turns intent into a pass.
  4. Attend the training. Complete the hands-on labs and the WSQ assessment to earn your Statement of Attainment.
  5. Sit the exam while it is fresh. Ideally within two to four weeks of the course, at our Pearson VUE centre.
  6. Claim what you are entitled to. Offset with SkillsFuture Credit or PSEA, and submit your UTAP claim after completion. Then use your 50% AWS retake-or-next-exam voucher to climb the ladder.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AWS exam fee included in the course fee?

No. The course fee covers instructor-led training, courseware and the WSQ assessment. The DEA-C01 exam costs USD 150 and is paid directly to AWS when you schedule through Pearson VUE. You can sit it at our own Pearson VUE test centre.

Do I have to pass the AWS exam to get the funding?

No. Course fee funding depends on attending the course and being assessed competent in the WSQ assessment, not on the AWS exam result. Meeting the minimum attendance requirement and passing the assessment secures your subsidy and your Statement of Attainment.

What will I actually pay for the course?

Eligible Singapore Citizens and PRs receive up to 70% funding, rising to up to 90% for Singapore Citizens aged 40 and above under MCES. SkillsFuture Credit, PSEA and UTAP can be applied to the balance. Send us your details and we will confirm your exact nett fee before you commit.

Can I sit the AWS exam at your centre?

Yes. AWS certification exams are delivered through Pearson VUE, and Tertiary Infotech Academy is a Pearson VUE Authorized Test Center. Schedule DEA-C01 through your AWS Certification account and select our centre at 12 Woodlands Square. Online proctored delivery via OnVUE is also available if you prefer to sit it remotely.

Do I need the recommended experience before enrolling?

AWS recommends two to three years of data engineering experience and one to two years of hands-on AWS experience. AWS recommendations are guidance, not gates - nothing prevents you from enrolling or from sitting the exam. If you are unsure whether to start here or a tier lower, talk to us and we will point you at the right course.

What happens if I fail the exam?

You may retake it after a 14-day waiting period, and there is no limit on attempts, though each retake is charged at full price. This is the practical argument for sitting the exam soon after training rather than months later - your first attempt is much more likely to be your only one.

How long is the certification valid?

Valid for 3 years. AWS will prompt you to recertify before expiry, and holding a current certification is what signals current knowledge to an employer.
