Topics include:

  • Installing R on your computer
  • Using the built-in datasets
  • Importing data
  • Creating bar and pie charts for categorical variables
  • Creating histograms and box plots for quantitative variables
  • Calculating frequencies and descriptives
  • Transforming variables
  • Coding missing data
  • Analyzing by subgroups
  • Creating charts for associations
  • Calculating correlations
  • Creating charts and statistics for three or more variables
  • Creating crosstabs for categorical variables

During the hands-on (challenge question) part, there is reference to certain slide number for the syntax relevant to that particular question. However, the slide numbers on the slides hand-out were not very obvious. Suggest to add reference to "which coding line" or "which page which slide" to minimize searching time. (Posted on 7/11/2017)

The room is very very warm with the doors closed. But teacher was good.

Course was too basic. I think the summary doesn't quite reflect the material. (Posted on 3/20/2017)

Good course for introduction to R. The statistics part towards the end of the course would probably not be directly useful for some people who are going to use R for data analysis. (Posted on 11/22/2016)

I find myself quite overloaded near the end of the session, perhaps since I have no background in programming so there was "lag phase". Perhaps giving the softcopy of the materials the day before would help to prepare students mentally of how much mental work they need to exert on d-day itself.

1. I really appreciate that I could borrow the laptop from the training centre.
2. I found the trainer, Dr. Ravi, delivered the contents very well. His delivery was clear and he earned trust from students that he has the knowledge to train us. (Posted on 8/14/2016)

Well the lesson was well conducted however some of the information was assumed that it should be known. However some of my friends do not have programming background. I think only further improvement needed is to translate some / more of the course information to more layman terms for them (Posted on 7/9/2016)

Dear Alfred,

Thank you for employing such a good lecturer .

The flow of the course is so smooth. Within such a short period, able to absorb so many thing.

Even the script was prepared and we do not need to worry that did not have the time to copy. We can always refer back.

The example given was useful.

Apart from that, I attended NUS-ISS Predictive Analytic Course(3 days course) half year ago. It was nowhere near what Mr Ravi taught.

Kindly let me know all the courses that taught by him so that I can attend.

Just get to know that he also taught R Machine Learning. I am very interested but would not be able to join within short period because I signed 4 courses with you this month.

I need show to management that I able to apply the R language in work. Then easier for me to justify for the course after 2 months.

Thank you.

Regards,
Looi (Posted on 7/9/2016)

Repackage the course to make it more concise - the 2nd part of the lesson was too rushed, which formed the most important parts of the course since the focus was on statistical analysis. Codes could also be written on the handout as exemplars for future use. Simple graphical representations involving pie charts, histograms and bar charts were not needed as they were too simple. Instead, more time could be focused on advanced statistical tools like Annova, use of t-test and chi-square. The link to the downloading of software could be given earlier so less time was needed to setup the software. (Posted on 6/11/2016)
