Next generation Networks, IMS and VoLTE

With the advent of LTE or 4G, Plain Old Telephony System (POTS) based on circuit switched call service is now facing serious challenges and competition from many Internet Protocol (IP) based 3rd party voice solutions like Skype, Viber, facetime etc. Operators are now facing declining revenues from voice services and are therefore looking towards technologies that can provide low cost IP based voice services.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a 4G wireless broadband technology developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), an industry trade group. 3GPP engineers named the technology "Long Term Evolution” because it represents the next step (4G) in a progression from GSM, a 2G standard, to UMTS, the 3G technologies based upon GSM. LTE provides significantly increased peak data rates, with the potential for 100 Mbps downstream and 30 Mbps upstream, reduced latency, scalable bandwidth capacity, and backwards compatibility with existing GSM and UMTS technology. LTE was seen initially as a technology for supporting high speed data, but there is a growing interest in the industry to support voice over LTE. While LTE provides efficient data traffic handling and high data rates, it lacks native circuit switched voice capability. The GSM association has standardised IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based VoLTE solution. VoLTE is based on GSMA IR.92 standard of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). VoLTE provides a technological leap from Circuit Switched (CS) networks to a high speed Packet Switched network, capable of supporting end to end IP based multimedia services. VoLTE is enabled by LTE network architecture that reduces packet delays while increasing bandwidth. Enabling it to support High Definition (HD) multimedia services including voice. LTE networks are also differentiated by its highly flexible and dynamic physical transmission resource configurations. Migration to VoLTE solution requires operators to have expensive and complex IMS deployments. This has led to some operators leveraging the existing 2G/3G networks with VoLTE methods like Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) and Simultaneous Voice over LTE (SVLTE) as an intermediate approach to supporting voice till IMS VoLTE is fully deployed.

This course will provide an overview of LTE, VoLTE, IMS and SIP to help telecommunication engineers gain the necessary knowledge of working on next generation 4G networks. This course is suitable for Telecommunication and networking engineers working or planning to work in Service providers and enterprises.

Network TrainerTruman Ng graduated with Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from NUS in year 2002. He designed Artificial Intelligence (AI) controller for DC-DC Power Convertor by using Fuzzy Logic and Neural Network (NN) as his university Final Year Project.

Truman has over 15 years project experiences across Database & Web Design, PLC machinery, Data Center Design , Structure Cabling System(SCS) and Enterprise Network Design and Implementation. He used to be a network architect for Hewlett Packard, working with a group of virtual team from the US in handling network design and projects in the States.

Truman is the founder of Nexplore (S) Pte Ltd. He provides solutions of Cloud SaaS, IaaS & PaaS and Software Defined Network (SDN), VoIP and Internet Security. He was engaged by Huawei Global Training Center to provide 60+ consultations and trainings for Internet Service Providers(ISP) from Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philipines, Australia, Poland, Iran, South Africa, Swaziland, Cote Dlvoire, Syria, Uzbekistan, New Zealand and countries over the world.
